Medical Disclaimer
Contraception SA gives general information about contraception and how it is accessed in South Africa. It is written in plain language and reviewed by an HPCSA-registered doctor for accuracy. It is not a substitute for personal medical advice.
Speak to a doctor
Which method is safe and suitable for you depends on your health and history. Some conditions, such as certain migraines, high blood pressure, smoking over the age of 35, or a history of blood clots, affect which methods can be used. Always confirm what is right for you with a registered doctor before starting, changing or stopping contraception.
STIs
Hormonal contraception (the pill, patch and injection) prevents pregnancy but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Only condoms do that.
In-person methods and emergencies
IUDs and implants must be fitted in person at a clinic. This site is not for emergencies. If you feel seriously unwell or have a bad reaction to a medicine, contact a doctor or your nearest emergency service.
Consultations and prescriptions are handled by Online Doctor SA, with HPCSA-registered doctors and SAPC-registered pharmacy partners.
